🤎 Let’s get real:

Hi! There’s been a lot on my mind and heart lately (as it goes when you’re a stay-at-home-working-mom). I miss my Papi daily! March will be month 5 of this grief journey. I hope to share more over time when I’m ready but for now, please know that writing and creating on the internet is such a gift and joy to my soul. So, thank you for reading (and occasionally commenting). I love getting replies by the way!

Most mornings start slow then speed up and get loud as soon our toddler son wakes up. I have a cute decorative sign in his room that says, “Mothers of boys work from son up to son down” and that couldn’t be truer. As we were eating breakfast and about to start reading the Bible together, I told my husband I felt conflicted.

Long story short— I did a brainstorm/brain dump session with my husband, which is basically when he lets me talk/process and then asks a couple of really helpful questions. Here’s what he shared:

Is Declutter Discontent™ a ministry or business first?
Your philosophy will impact everything else when you answer that question first.

Pressure is off. I was letting the numbers and how-to-make-6-figures posts by online experts get to me. We each get to define what our version of success is. The ability to afford to stay home with my son, pursue my creative projects, and hopefully impact some women in the process— that’s success! I’m already rich.

With that being said, I decided to write out the names of new Substack subscribers and put them on this board to remember that they’re actual people. No, they’re not paid subscribers or clients, but nonetheless image bearers. Maybe their lives will change through the Gospel— one newsletter/workshop/video at a time. And that’s the kind of legacy Papi was all about. Smile, Jesus loves you!

🤗 My God-moment of the week

If you’re on social media, you probably noticed the 2016 trend of everyone sharing their photos and highlights from a decade ago! Long story short… For the past couple of months, I’ve been feeling really sad because I deleted my Facebook account before my dad passed away and I was heartbroken thinking about all the photos that I lost. And then I got a new phone so I’ve been uploading photos because I didn’t have them saved in the ‘cloud.’ I found these photos that were archived on my Instagram account from 2016 when I was a college senior visiting my home in Mexico. I cried happy tears! What a bittersweet moment— I miss Papi every day but I’m so thankful I found these photos that hold such a special place in my heart and will be framed soon for my home.

🎄How to thrive (not just survive) this Christmas

Honestly, I’ve been dreading Christmas. I wish I could postpone or cancel it altogether. This won’t be the first holiday without seeing my Papi. I spent five years living 2,000 miles away from my family. I became accustomed to spending holidays with our church family.

What is heart-wrenching about this upcoming holiday is the reality that my plans changed and I didn’t have a choice. I was eager and expectant to spend this Christmas with my parents, husband, and son because it would’ve been the first Christmas with them since 2019 (before moving across the country).

But my Papi (dad) passed away suddenly in October. It’s only been two months since the Lord called him home to Heaven and yet it has felt brutally long— like an eternity.

The best way I can describe it is that ever since becoming a parent, I experienced a closeness, appreciation, and affection for Papi that I didn’t really have before. I always loved my dad but this past year was when I really enjoyed our friendship and weekly phone calls. He was the only person who could cheer me up with honest questions like “Do you ever get mad as a parent?” And then we’d laugh because we both knew the answer without having to say a word. His sense of humor and optimism was truly inspiring.

More than a positive mindset, Papi truly lived hopeful— a hope in the resurrection, Heaven is real, one day Christ will return, and one day Christ will make all things new.

One of his most common sayings was, “Smile, Jesus loves you!”

So if the only reason for the season is Jesus isn’t that more than enough?

My main reason to smile and my source of joy and contentment has only ever been Jesus in the first place.

How can I thrive and not just survive this Christmas? Today I remembered that I should actually read the Advent guide I made not just for others but for my own soul.

Psalm 23 reads, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.” (CSB)

Amid the grief, disappointment, and regret… I shall not want. I lack nothing. Amid the loss, doubts, and heartache…

Jesus is the greater temple, priest, shepherd, and king.

Jesus is the greater comfort, joy, and peace.

Lift your eyes and get your hopes up. He is the promise fulfilled.

Christ has come. He made a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. He is the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior and Redeemer (Isaiah 43).

🎄 So Much Greater Preview

An abundant life is not the absence of suffering or sorrow but rather the presence of Jesus. You and I can live full lives because of the person and work of Christ. We don’t have to wait until we achieve that next goal, job, or relationship. Whatever season of life you find yourself in currently, you can live it to the fullest.

Psalm 16:11 states, “In your presence there is fullness of joy…”

John 1:16 states, “From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.”

Colossians 2:9 states, “For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.”

He is the promise fulfilled.

Jesus is the greater temple, priest, shepherd, and king.

I shall not want. I have what I need. I lack nothing.

This segment is all about what I decluttered, organized, and cleaned this past week.

BIG NEWS— We moved! After six months of living with my in-laws and having most of our belongings in storage, we finally have our own (rental) home again. It’s a bittersweet occasion because their support, love, and care has been such a gift to me, especially as I grieve losing my Papi. Every meal and ‘good morning’ and prayer we shared has blessed me. But the good news is that we literally live right across from my in-laws and Gigi, which means that Levi gets to grow up with grandparents and his great grandma, Lord willing. This is truly a dream-come-true. More photos and of course videos coming very soon!
